The history of Bonfire Night
Who doesn’t love getting wrapped up in your big coats, scarves, gloves and cosy leggings for a busy Bonfire Night period?! We love the food, entertainment and fun to be had during this holiday, but have you ever thought about the history behind the event?
Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, is celebrated annually on the 5th November, and is primarily an event celebrated in the UK. The holiday is to recall the events of the 5th November 1605, when a member of the Gunpowder Plot, Guy Fawkes was arrested whilst guarding the explosives purposefully placed below the House of Lords. As the intended recipient of the attack, King James I, survived the plot, London residents lit bonfires in celebration of the failure of the attack and the Observance of the November Act was later enforced as an annual day of thanksgiving.
For decades after the event, ‘Gunpower Treason Day’, how it was initially known, was celebrated, but did cause a lot of unrest between the Catholics and Puritans. For hundreds of years, the conflicts continued, until ‘changing attitudes’ in the 1850’s toned down the issues, and the ‘Observance of the November Act’ was revoked.
In today’s world, the history behind Guy Fawkes has become less of a focus, and has become much more of a sociable event, with large organised bonfire and fireworks events across the country loosely linking to the event back in the 17th century.
Settlers have said to bring the concept of Guy Fawkes night overseas, including North America, where it was mostly known as ‘Pope Day’, but the celebration died out during the American Revolution.
