Let’s face it, when you’re busy working or looking after the kids, sometimes the motivation to get up and get moving can be tough. Wouldn’t we all just prefer to have a chilled-out evening with a glass of wine in our hand? But if you’re really wanting to get that fitness bug, why not start your journey by getting your best friend to join you and having a bit of fun with it!
It may sound obvious, but having a companion with you at the gym, can be great for moral support, motivation and help to add some fun to those tough workout sessions. Partner workouts are also a brilliant way to add some diversity to your workouts, as they open up a variety of different avenues for new routines and activities to try, that you wouldn’t be able to do alone.
An exercise ball is a great asset to a workout, adding an additional element to your sessions and can be a great bit of kit for you and a friend! To help you get started on your best friend fitness journey, we’ve shared some of our favourite partner workouts so you can really enhance your gym workouts – let us know in the comments if you’ve given these a try!
Back to back Exercise ball
Your best friend has got your back, and you’ve got theirs. So, why not hold your exercise ball back to back with your bestie, slowly and safely inch your feet forward, and simultaneously bend your knees to a squat position, keeping your arms outstretched or hands closed at chest level. Slowly stand back up to count as one rep, and continue for 10 reps, to help tone thighs and bum – remember to try and keep that exercise ball in place for the entirety of the exercise!
Jump, squat, clap
You’ll need more than a round of applause after this one! Stand face to face with your partner, and both take a step to your left or right, so you’re not directly facing each other. Start the exercise with a squat, keeping your head up, and jump as high as you can back to your original position, and clap hands with your friend. Do this for 10 reps to really feel the burn!
Best Friend Bridge
Sit opposite your friend with your knees up and feet flat on the floor. Carefully lie your back on the floor, and make sure you and your besties toes are touching. Carefully lift your feet up and place the soles of your feet/trainers together so they are comfortably resting against each other, with your arms outstretched along the floor for extra support. Lift your hips up, pushing against your partners feet, remembering to not straighten out your legs, and keep them bent. This is a great bum workout and can really help to improve your balance!
Sit up and stretch
Follow the first few steps of the previous exercise and lie back with you and your friends’ toes touching. Pick one person to start with the exercise ball, and both lie down. Use your core muscles to sit up and pass the ball to your partner. They will then need to lower carefully back down to the floor, outstretch their arms behind them, and tap the floor with the ball. Do this for 10 reps and repeat after a short rest for the ultimate workout.
