How To Celebrate Pride Month at Home

How To Celebrate Pride Month at Home

Life is so different for most of us at the moment.

But while you’re staying inside and protecting the people we love; you don’t have to put your life on hold.

June has officially been Pride month since around 1999 when U.S. President, Bill Clinton, declared June ‘Gay and Lesbian Pride Month’. But it’s beginning can actually be traced back to the 1969 Stonewall riots. The first Pride march took place a year later in commemoration, making this year the 50th year of Pride.

This year parades may be cancelled but that’s no reason not to celebrate. Whether you are LGBTQ+ yourself, or an ally, there’s plenty you can do this year to mark the occasion.

Being stuck inside may have its disadvantages, but one great advantage is you have time to research! Pride month is a great excuse to brush up on your history and educate yourself on LGBTQ+ matters. There’s loads of useful information out there, why not start with LGBT Foundation.

It’s also a great time to support LGBTQ+ arts, maybe with a movie marathon? Representation matters. Stories have the power to shape how we see ourselves and each other. So when a film comes along the really nails the queer experience, it becomes an instant favourite in the community. Here are some of our favourites to get you started…

Moonlight (2016)

Paris is Burning (1990)

Blue is the Warmest Colour (2013)

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

If you’re missing the community spirit of Pride, there are still loads of ways you can get involved. There are virtual events like Pride Inside that you can attend. It's an online series of gigs, comedy shows, panel discussions and arts-based events.

Celebrating Pride Month virtually means that everyone can experience Pride in the same way. And reliance on digital and social media means it can reach new audiences and raise even more awareness.

Pride London’s theme #YouMeUsWe is a rallying cry to the LGBTQ+ community to reach out, understand and support one another. Which this is important now, more than ever. It’s also encouraging us to be better allies.

For us here at Love Leggings, every month is Pride Month. Everyone is welcome every day of the year.

Inclusivity is one of the founding principles of Love Leggings and that stretches beyond our inclusive sizing. We truly believe in empowering every woman, every body, every where through representation. We work hard to ensure everyone can see a representation of themselves, both in our models and those we choose to collaborate with.

Over the past year and a half, we’ve been fortunate enough to work with members of the LGBTQ+ community, collaborating with them to create awesome content that we’ve shared via social media and in our wider campaigns. And we look forward to meeting and working with more in the years to come.

Love Leggings is committed to being an ally of the LGBTQ+ community. And we want to wish everyone a happy Pride Month.
