Celebrate the women in your life this International Women's Day
Everyone knows a woman that has influenced their lives. Any women from your mother, sister, lover or friend. But often we find that many women's accomplishments still go unnoticed. Today, the 8th March 2020, is the day we change that as we’re celebrating International Women’s Day.
But… What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate all the amazing achievements made by women, today and throughout history. Their social, economic, cultural and political accomplishments have effects that span the globe. International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate everything we, as women, have achieved.
It’s also a day to raise awareness for bias against women and a day to take action against inequality. Without which, nothing changes.
It’s powered by the collective efforts of people working together around the world to raise awareness and take action. A community of people who are striving towards gender equality. Today is all about unity, celebration, reflection advocacy and action, both globally and at a local level.
So, where did International Women’s Day start?
International Women's Day was founded in the U.S. and you can trace the roots of the celebration back to the women’s marches in the early 1900s. But the first International Women’s Day wasn't celebrated in the U.K. until 1975. And in 1977, a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace was announced.
2011 marked 100 years since the first International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. To mark the occasion, U.S. President, Barak Obama, proclaimed March to be 'Women’s History Month'. A month to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of women in shaping the world. And singer, Annie Lennox, led a march across London in support of the charity 'Women for Women International'.
Today, it’s easier than ever to get involved by attending events and getting involved in some of the International Women’s Day 2020 projects. Take a look on their website for all the information you need.
